Pope Francis I

We, as the citizens this planet, still have a long way to go. But I am glad that I live in an era that has seen the election of the first African-American U.S. President, and now the first Latino Pope.

There is still so much to be done for the advancement of women, for same-gender loving people, and for many other groups, and things are not perfect in our government, as they will not be in the Roman Catholic Church.

But I do think that change is good, and brings new possibilities for a better world.

I don't embrace the pessimism of much of the apocalyptic theology with which I was raised.

I don't think that the world is a bad place, and I don't have a doomsday mentality. I think that it's a great time to be alive, and I have faith that ultimately His will will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Catholic church is what it is, and I am as aware as anyone else of all the abuses that have taken place within it. And I am also familiar with the position that this Pope has taken on marriage equality, and the extreme things that he has said in the past concerning it, and about other issues pertaining to same-gender loving people.

That's not a surprise, as his views are basically reflective of that of the RCC, in general.

But, in trying to see the glass half-full, and in an effort to look for the possibilities of the big picture, I say (for what it's worth) "Bravo" in regards to yesterday's decision.

Change doesn't happen overnight, and there compromises that must be made all along the way, as we continue to advance and move toward a better world.

Congratulations to all my Catholic friends...may God bless you and your new leader!
